How can I calculate the size (in bytes / kb) of my messages?

and is it using strings or bytearray behind the scenes?

The communication is 100% transparent - we use a bit of everything depending on the users flash version and other factors. Likewise its deemed to change soon so no you can't calculate the size of your message.

I just realized why you might want this - To be able to see in and out kbps use of your game. I am pretty sure we will add that as a feature in the server.
